Common cures for various Dialer Problems.
Please read this entire page before attempting any changes.
You may only need to follow some of the steps.
One of the most common problems with modems is the fact that they won't dial. So here
is a few things to look at and check when your modem won't dial.
First, use your desk phone to see if that line has a dial tone. If not, I think we found
the problem. If that line has dial tone and you can call out, that isn't the problem.
Next, check to see if the phone line plugged into the right spot on the modem. If there is
two plugs on the modem, make sure the phone line from the wall is in the plug that says
wall or line. If you are not sure, re-route the cable and make sure it is plugged into the
correct spot.
Ok, so it isn't something simple. So, lets get deep into this.
Things to do when the modem won't initialize.
Check to see if the modem is installed and try to connect again.
Check to make sure if Dial Up networking has the correct modem setup
and try to connect again.
Ok, you made sure the modem is installed, and Dial up networking has the correct modem.
Now try this.
Try to remove and reinstall the modem and try to connect again.
If that still doesn't work...
Try to remove and reinstall Dial up networking and try to
connect again.
Ok, that didn't get you anywhere. There is one more thing to try. Caution!
This step is recommended only people who are confident in taking their computer a
part. Remove the case, and remove the modem from the computer. Restart the computer with
out the modem, and run the Add New Hardware wizard. It should
say something about finding at least COM ports. After that is finished, shut down the
computer, and replace the modem. After the computer boots again, go to Modems in the "Control Panel" and have it detect the
modem.
The modem still won't work. It sounds like a major software/hardware problem.
Recommend them to the nearest/best repair shop/person.
