Common Connection Problems

Common cures for various Connection Problems.

Please read this entire page before attempting any changes.
You may only need to follow some of the steps.

Ok. Since you clicked on connection problems, we can assume that the modem is dialing some sort of a number. So, now we have to figure out why the computer will not make a connection to the internet.

The first thing to check is the phone number. Make sure that it is a correct NetOne number, and that it isn't trying to dial numbers that are not supposed to be in the number string. To check to see if the number is correct, bring up the properties of the NetOne icon in Dial-Up Networking.

The next thing to try it to have the customer make a long distance call to one of our other sites. To get a list of numbers, go here. If the new number works, more than likely NetOne has a problem with a modem.

Another problem may have to do with how Windows is dialing the internet. There are two things here that could restrict the ability of Windows to dial the internet.
The first is to determine whether the computer it dialing using the TONE or PULSE method. To do that, you need to click on the button that says Dial Properties on your Connect To... screen. To get the "Connect to screen", double click on the NetOne icon in Dial-Up Networking.

The second thing to look for is the Call Waiting settings. If you do not have call waiting, you want to make sure call waiting is shut off. Or, if you do have call waiting, you need to make sure the computer is dialing the correct number to disable it. To adjust the call waiting settings, you you need to click on the button that says Dial Properties on your Connect To... screen. To get the "Connect to screen", double click on the NetOne icon in Dial-Up Networking.

If none of the above options worked, there are two more things to try. Both have to do with the modem and how the NetOne connection uses the modem.
The first thing to look at is how the modem is configured under the connection properties. To get to the connection properties, go to Dial-Up Networking, and get the properties of the NetOne icon. At the bottom of the General Tab, there is a button that says "Configure". Click on configure, and another set of tabs will show up. Once you get here, click on the tab labeled "Connection". Here, you have to make sure that the settings read "8, None, 1". Then click on the button at the bottom labeled "Advanced". Here, make sure that there are a couple of things checked. First, make sure it has Use error control and Compress data checked, as well as Use flow control and Hardware(RTS/CTS). After you have made sure those are correct, hit ok.

If those settings are set correctly, go back to the "General" tab, and look at the Maximum Speed. First make sure that it is set no higher than 38,400, unless you have a 56K modem. If it is already set to 38,400, then drop it down to 19,200 and try it there. If it still gives you problems, go back and drop it down to 9,600, then 4,800, and so on. If the computer starts to connect at the lower speeds, then it sounds like there is a problem with the phone line. But before you call the phone company, check out these other possible phone line problems.

If you have determined that the above isn't the problem, then you may have to do some re-configuration on the computer. The first thing to do is to reinstall the Dial Up Adapter from the "NetWork" icon in the "Control Panel". If that doesn't work, you may have to reinstall Dial Up Networking from the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the "Control Panel".

If it still isn't connecting, it sounds like a major hardware or software problem that is out of our hands here at NetOne. You will need to contact a repair shop, or the vendor for the product.
